Direct TV TiVo DVR
Philips DSR6000, Hughes GXCEBOT, Sony SAT T60
DirecTV TiVo DVR
This is an older series of Direct
TiVo
satellite receivers. They don't
make them anymore, but I'm
listing them here since you could still get one refurbished online
like from eBay, or used from your local classifieds, or something
like that and they are totally upgradeable. If you connect your TiVo
unit up to a phone line it will automatically receive any software
updates.
Believe it or not, the Sony SAT
T60, Hughes GXCEBOT, and Philips DSR6000 TiVo DVR units, are
basically the same in most important aspects, with the only
differences being the front panel and the brand name that appears on
the box.
All of these Direct TV TiVo DVR receivers were
assembled using the same parts from the same Mexican factory. They
all have dual tuners and the same TiVo functionality.
These models all come stock with 40
GB hard drive, which gives it the capacity to hold 35 hours of
digital programming.
See my article upgrade
or hack Direct TV TiVo receivers to get details on how to add a second
or larger hard drive to get more record time.
With this series of Direct TV TiVo
satellite receivers you get 8-second instant-replay, Pause,
fast-forward, and rewind live television. Jump-to-live button on
remote, 4 picture-quality settings basic, medium, high, or best. But
note the higher settings take up more storage space, so you get
fewer hours of record time.
You get access to over 225
digital-quality channels of DirecTV programming with the convenience
and control of the DirecTV Digital Video Recorder.
There's even more to love from a Direct Tv
TiVo DVR receiver
Here are a few more features...
• Dual Tuners allow you to record
two shows at the same time or watch one while recording another.
• Use Season Pass to
automatically record every episode of your favorite shows.
• Use WishList to find and record
programs that match your interests.
• DirecTV Advanced Program Guide
for access to up to 14 days of program listings.
Philips DSR7000, Hughes HDVR2, RCA
DVR40, Hughes SD-DVR40, Philips DSR704 TiVo DVR
These are the next generation of
DirecTV/TiVo satellite receivers. As with the older Sony SAT T60,
Hughes GXCEBOT and Philips DSR6000 TiVos, the Philips DSR7000,
Hughes HDVR2, RCA DVR40, Hughes SD-DVR40, and Philips DSR704
units are basically identical. When the respective manufactures
discontinued the earlier generation receivers they just replaced
them with these and kept on rolling.
They still use the same parts and
are built in the same Mexican factory.
The only differences between the
DSR7000, DSR704, SD-DVR40 and HDVR2 are:
Color of the remote (DSR7000 has a
silver remote; HDVR2, SD-DVR40 have a black remote)
Appearance of the front panel
(DSR7000 has an open slot for the DirecTV access card; HDVR2 has a
small panel door that lifts to conceal the card)
Name on box (Philips, Hughes, RCA,
Sony) on screen and on the front of the receiver
All come stock from the factory
with 40 GB hard drives installed, except the Hughes SD-DVR100 which
comes with a 100 GB hard drive installed, which is basically a
factory upgraded TiVo.
But all the TiVo/DirecTV receivers
listed here (old and new) can be upgraded
or hacked by adding a second or larger hard drive to get more
record time.
The features that really matter are
all the same:

Samsung SIR-S4120R / SIR-S4040R TiVo DVR
The Samsung SIR-S4120 and SIR-S4040R
Direct TV TiVo satellite receiver comes stock with a 120GB hard drive
for up to 100 hours of digital recording. That much hard drive space
also allows you to pause live tv for up to 30 minutes. And as with
previous DirecTV/TiVo satellite receivers you have the option to
replay and slow mo live tv as well.
The SIR-4120/SIR-S4040 box comes
equipped with one S-video output, two A/V outputs, and an
optical/digital audio output that will pass Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo
or Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound through your audio system.
The SIR-S4120/SIR-S4040 also
combines the services of Direct TV Advanced Program Guide and
TiVo's Live TV Guide so that every available program is
listed two different ways up to 14 days in advance. This DirecTV
TiVo DVR also features a dual tuner (two DirecTV digital satellite
signals), like the others on this page, that allows you to record
up to two separate shows at the same time while you watch
another.
